Johannes Rau, the Social Democratic candidate for chancellor of West Germany, pledged to halt Bonn’s participation in the U.S. Strategic Defense Initiative if elected in January. He told an election rally that the agreement between the U.S. and West German governments to work jointly on the U.S. “Star Wars” project “is contrary to the vital interests of our people.” Rau characterized the participation of West German industry in the SDI program “probably the most serious mistake” made by Chancellor Helmut Kohl, whom Rau is facing in the Jan. 25 national parliamentary election.
