A case of legionnaire’s disease has turned up at the City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte for the seventh time in seven months. The illness was discovered in a patient who is recovering in the bone marrow treatment ward. Doctors said the case was similar to three others discovered at the hospital in August. Investigators are still trying to find the source of the disease. They are awaiting results on tests performed on the water main, air conditioning ducts, shower heads and other wet areas where the bacteria grows. Legionnnaire’s disease, which causes pneumonia, cannot be transmitted from person to person. It was discovered in 1976, when 29 people died after contracting the disease at an American Legion convention in Philadelphia.
