The governor of Jiangxi province in southeastern China has been formally dismissed for making “serious mistakes,” the New China News Agency said Saturday. Ni Xiance, who was appointed to the office on July 1, 1985, was one of the highest-ranking officials affected by China’s crackdown on corruption.

Ni’s removal from office was first reported Oct. 1 by the Shanghai-based Liberation Daily newspaper, which said he abused his power “to satisfy his own selfish desires.”

The New China News Agency said Ni was officially stripped of his position Thursday during a meeting of the Jiangxi Provincial People’s Congress, the local legislature. The details of the case were not disclosed.
