The World : Kuwait Fires at Aircraft

Kuwaiti troops fired two missiles at a “hostile” plane that violated the country’s airspace, and the aircraft was believed to have been shot down, a senior government official was quoted as saying. Ali Sabah, governor of the Ahmadi region in southern Kuwait, where the oil industry is based, told the newspaper Al Anba that the plane was detected by Kuwaiti radar. “Two missiles were immediately fired on the unknown aircraft, which disappeared on the radar screens. This means that it has almost certainly been shot down,” the governor was quoted as saying. Other sources suggested it may have been an Iranian warplane looking for a target in the Persian Gulf. Iran accuses Kuwait of supporting its gulf war enemy, Iraq, and Iranian gunboats last Tuesday attacked a Kuwaiti-owned supertanker in the gulf.
