Up to 35,000 black miners refused to report to work today at three gold mines that rejected pay increases of up to 23% awarded in an industry settlement, a union spokesman said.

It was the third time since 1984--when black miners won the right to strike--that miners have tried to force wage increases through legal walkouts. National Union of Mine Workers spokesman Marcel Golding said the strikes began late Sunday at three of six mines owned by the Goldfields Group. A company spokesman confirmed the walkout but put the number of strikers at 25,000.
