More than 2,000 students battled riot police in a violent anti-government and anti-American demonstration on a university campus today.

The demonstrators, shouting, “Down with military dictatorship” and “Drive out U.S. imperialists,” hurled hundreds of rocks and firebombs at police who retaliated by firing tear gas, witnesses said. Some policemen were injured by rocks and glass from smashed windows. The two-hour clash at Kunkook University in a southeastern district of Seoul was one of the most violent student riots in months, authorities said.
