JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —
Police with dogs and whips arrested 15 white women today in a sit-down demonstration to mark the burial in neighboring Mozambique of President Samora Machel.
Dozens of armed police and soldiers patrolled in the streets to enforce a ban on memorial services to mark Machel’s funeral. Authorities also prevented Winnie Mandela and Albertina Sisulu, the wives of two jailed African National Congress leaders from traveling to Maputo, the Mozambican capital, for the burial.
