Villagers, Troops Clash

RIANO, Spain —
Villagers opposing the flooding of their homes by a new dam fought a 16-hour battle with paramilitary forces, a spokesman for the provincial governor said Wednesday. The clashes started when villagers tried to stop workers laying underground telephone cables. The cables will be connected with a new village built above the dam when the old village is flooded next year.
