New York City will offer free, anonymous AIDS screening, beginning Wednesday at a Manhattan clinic. Susan Rosenthal, Health Department AIDS counseling director, said that eventually, the tests will be available throughout the city. She said the program includes analysis of a blood sample, identified only by number, and at least two counseling sessions. The test shows antibodies to the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome, but cannot diagnose the disease.
