The editor of the Spanish-language edition of Le Monde Diplomatique was found dead in the trunk of his car, police said today.

Ivan Menendez Macias, 38, had been shot at least five times. A police spokesman said neighbors found the body and notified police on Thursday.

His car was found near his home in a residential neighborhood on Mexico City’s south side. It was also near the office of the Spanish-language edition of Le Monde Diplomatique, the monthly newspaper on world affairs published in Mexico by a French company.

In August, Menendez was named editor of the Spanish edition, sold throughout Latin America and Spain. Menendez also was director of Divulgacion, a magazine of the governing Institutional Revolutionary Party, and wrote for the Mexico City newspaper Unomasuno.

At least six journalists have been killed in Mexico this year and about 30 have been killed in the last four years. Most of the cases have not been solved.
