Hundreds of black South African miners ended a two-day strike at Evander, 65 miles east of Johannesburg, only hours after clashes between strikers and mine security officers who fired tear gas and rubber bullets. A company spokesman said security officers at the Kinross Gold Mine dispersed “unruly mobs” of strikers who tried to prevent colleagues from going to work. The strike was triggered by the dismissal of a labor leader. In Port Elizabeth, General Motors accused labor unions of cutting communications and said its plants would not open on Monday.
