The Nation : More Youths Go to College
A record 58% of the nation’s 1985 high school graduates went on to college, and most other graduates were able to find jobs, according to a Labor Department report. But students who dropped out of high school during the 1984-85 school year fared poorly in the job market. Only 62% were working in October, 1985, the department’s Monthly Labor Review said. During the 1970s, the proportion of high school graduates entering college each year hovered around 50% to 52%, but it has been rising for the last several years, reaching 55% in 1984.
