AIDS specialists in Britain welcomed government formation of a top-level Cabinet committee to coordinate the fight against AIDS, but they called for immediate action and greater funding.

“We can’t sit back and let the French and the Americans do all the work on research, and then expect to reap the benefits,” Dr. John Harris of St. Mary’s Hospital said.

Britain now has 520 reported cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and 250 people in the country have died from the fatal disease that robs the body of its immune system, officials say.
