Com Systems, a long-distance telephone company based in Van Nuys, said its earnings rose 241%, to $351,000, or 8 cents a share, in the second quarter ended Sept. 30. Revenue was up 44% from a year earlier to $8.4 million.

The company attributed the improvement to having attracted new business customers and the implementation of cost controls last year. Rex A. Licklider, president and chief executive, said the cost controls included cutting employment to 145 from 170 in early 1985, partly through increased automation.

For the six months ended Sept. 30, Com Systems earned $552,000, or 12 cents a share, a turnaround from a loss of $176,000, or 4 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue increased 29.7%, to $15.1 million.
