Freed Soviet dissident Anatoly Shcharansky publicly apologized for meeting with two Arab supporters of the Palestine Liberation Organization after right-wing Israelis criticized him for it. In a television address, he said that he did not know at the time that the two Arabs were “identified with the PLO,” which he condemned as an “organization of murderers . . . beneath any moral standard.” Shcharansky had talked with the Arabs after they appealed for his help in fighting an Israeli expulsion order against Akram Haniyeh, editor of the East Jerusalem daily Al Shaab. The editor has been accused of having subversive connections with the PLO.
