Brutality, executions, political detentions and abuse of the press are hallmarks of the government of Liberian President Samuel K. Doe, a human rights group charged. The private, New York-based Lawyers Committee for Human Rights based its conclusions mainly on the findings of a journalist, Bill Berkeley, who spent a month in the African nation last spring interviewing the alleged victims, their families and others. The report said that “summary killings have been a recurring feature” of Doe’s regime and that several hundred people were executed after an attempted coup in November, 1985.
