W. Germany, U.S. Smash Drug Ring That Supplied GIs
West German customs officials and U.S. Army investigators smashed a German, American and Dutch drug ring that supplied American military personnel with cocaine and heroin, the Stars and Stripes reported today.
The U.S. armed forces newspaper said more than 100 drug dealers have been arrested, breaking up a ring that had been smuggling narcotics into the Mannheim area of West Germany, 50 miles south of Frankfurt, since 1981.
Karltheo Greiner, spokesman for the West German customs service, said some Americans are among 40 suspects arrested so far in West Germany. He said 70 other suspects were rounded up in the Netherlands.
“The hard stuff--cocaine and heroin--was sold mainly to GIs in the Mannheim area,” Greiner said.
