The Nation : Rehnquist Deed Rewritten

Share

The deed to Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist’s summer home in Vermont no longer prohibits its sale or lease to Jews, the town clerk of Greensboro, Vt., said. The clerk, Bridget Collier, said that Rehnquist transferred the property to his attorney, who drew up a new deed without the restriction and transferred it back to him. During Rehnquist’s confirmation hearings earlier this year, senators questioned him about the the restrictive clause in the house’s original deed, drawn up in 1933. Rehnquist said he had been unaware of the clause.
