Ethiopian guerrillas claimed Tuesday that they killed 300 government troops and took 500 prisoners in the second major clash in the north of the country this month. The report could not be independently verified.

The rebel Ethiopian People’s Democratic Movement said in a statement issued in the Sudanese capital here that a large group of guerrillas, backed by others from the Tigre People’s Liberation Front, ambushed government troops near the town of Sekota in Wollo province.

The statement said the government forces, consisting of more than four battalions, aimed to retake Sekota from the rebels who overran it last week.
