Bonn Break With Syria Urged
A high-ranking Parliament member urged the government today to consider breaking diplomatic ties with Syria after testimony at a terrorist trial linked the Arab nation to a bombing in West Berlin.
Hans Stercken, chairman of the foreign affairs committee, said the Bonn government should break relations if the outcome of the trial of Ahmed Nawaf Hasi and Farouk Salameh, both Palestinians, “demonstrates there was cooperation and complicity on the part of the Syrian Embassy in East Berlin.” Stercken is a member of Chancellor Helmut Kohl’s Christian Democratic Union party.
