‘Free Exercise of Ignorance’

Will’s remonstration that “judicial activism” is likely to produce pernicious supervision of American life is a refreshing whiff from conservative quarters.

Public schools--ostensibly forums in which the physical and political worlds are made rational--cannot adequately explore the immutable mysteries of the holy, or even reconcile them to the practical business of practical education. To suggest otherwise discloses the poverty of one’s faith, one’s ignorance of education, or both. Indeed, faith unable to withstand Locke, Marx, Darwin, and Freud, ought to be challenged.

Lamentably “religious irritability” and religiously inspired litigation are, as Will notes, markedly increasing. As an antidote I suggest our Tennessee and Alabama brethren withdraw from the nation’s overburdened courts and quietly review I John 4:4-6.
