BBC’S 50TH BIRTHDAY
Cecil Smith’s praise for the BBC’s coverage of news may be deserved in general, but it has a seriously flawed record on Northern Ireland, where it is under the shadow of the British government’s policy (“Happy 50th, Auntie Bebe,” Nov. 9).
Liz Curtis’ “Ireland: The Propaganda War” documented how often the BBC censored objective coverage and has provided viewers with a totally distorted understanding of the conflict.
Having come to the subject on free-lance assignment with an original tilt to the British position, I have now come to realize that a good deal of the continuing tragedy rests with the BBC and other British media.
A full understanding of the nature of the conflict makes it clear that only reunification of Ireland will provide lasting peace and justice, and the BBC’s eager compliance with Britain’s efforts to obscure that is a dark chapter in its history.
