Immigration reform legislation passed recently by Congress will be the subject of an upcoming conference of the county Board of Supervisors.

The board agreed Tuesday to schedule the conference in January at the urging of Supervisor Brian Bilbray, whose district includes much of the county’s populated area along the U.S. border with Mexico.

Bilbray said the county needs to assess the impact the legislation will have on the government’s ability to provide public services to the new immigrants and others. He also wants the county to monitor any discrimination against Latinos that results from the new immigration law.

The board also approved Bilbray’s suggestion to call for the creation of a presidential task force to evaluate the same issues throughout the country.

The task force would be made up of local government representatives, Latino leaders, and state and federal officials.
