Three mortar shells fired at the army-police station in Newry, Northern Ireland, about 35 miles south of Belfast, overshot the mark and slammed into homes, injuring 25 civilians, four of them seriously, police said. The injured included a 4-year-old girl and an 80-year-old man. Police said one house suffered a direct hit, trapping three people under the rubble. No one immediately claimed responsibility, but police said they suspect the outlawed Irish Republican Army, which is seeking to drive the British out of the province.
