South Africa tightened its 5-month-old nationwide state of emergency today and legal experts said the move indicated the government was set for prolonged emergency rule.

Police were given the power to ban “any gatherings,” removing an earlier stipulation that a magistrate’s order was necessary to stop indoor political meetings. Outdoor meetings have been banned for years. A lawyer said this showed that “the state of emergency is certainly not dead” and it appears Pretoria was not preparing to lift it any time soon.
