An elderly couple found traveling 20 m.p.h. on an interstate highway had gotten lost a day earlier en route to a doctor’s appointment in their hometown of Toledo, Ohio, 60 miles away, authorities said.

The unidentified couple, in their 80s, ended up eating a Thanksgiving dinner of sandwiches, soft drinks and pumpkin pie at the Michigan State Police station in Detroit, Trooper Curt Robertson said.

“They left Wednesday morning to go to the doctor’s office, got on I-75, missed their exit and continued on I-75 until they got to Detroit. That’s about 60 miles,” Robertson said.

He said the couple, who had only a few dollars with them and a car that was almost out of gas, slept in their car overnight and tried to find their way home on Thanksgiving.

“They had never been to Detroit and they said it was a beautiful city--what they saw of it.”

Relatives from Toledo took the couple home Thursday.
