Remains Thought Those of U.S. Servicemen Arrive in Hawaii
Remains believed to be those of three U.S. servicemen killed in Vietnam arrived last week at Hickam Air Force Base and were taken to the Army’s Central Identification Laboratory, officials said.
Caskets containing the remains were carried off an Air Force jet by a military honor guard and were taken to the identification center, where specialists will try to identify them, said a duty officer at Hickam.
The remains were turned over to a U.S. military delegation by Vietnamese officials Wednesday.
The delegation was headed by Lt. Col. Paul Mather, head of the Bangkok office of the Honolulu-based Joint Casualty Resolution Center.
Mather, speaking last week in Bangkok, declined to give details on the remains but quoted the Vietnamese as saying they had retrieved them while investigating reports from local people.
The Pentagon lists 2,424 Americans as missing in Southeast Asia.
