Joe Engle, who commanded two space shuttle missions and narrowly missed a chance to walk on the moon, has resigned from NASA, officials said today.

Engle, 54, the ninth shuttle flier to leave the astronaut office since the Jan. 28 Challenger disaster, plans to work as a consultant for aerospace businesses in the Houston area, a space agency spokeswoman said. Engle retired Nov. 14 as a colonel in the Air Force after nearly 31 years’ service and had been working since then as a civilian consultant for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
