About one-third of Chinese students between the ages of 7 and 22 suffer from lack of nutrition, according to a government survey reported Tuesday.

The survey, involving nearly 1 million students in 29 provinces, found that 28% of the males and 36% of the females did not get adequate nutrition, the English-language China Daily reported.

Only 2% of male students and 3% of females were overweight, the report said.

The survey, sponsored by various state agencies, was begun in 1983, it said.
