South Korea’s political opposition, thwarted by police in its bid to hold a huge anti-government rally in Seoul last week, plans to hold street protests across the country Dec. 13. The New Korea Democratic Party said it will hold simultaneous rallies in about 10 cities to press its demands for direct presidential elections next year and an end to what it calls the military dictatorship of President Chun Doo Hwan. Chun’s Democratic Justice Party denounced the opposition’s plans as an attempt to seize power through a civil uprising and vowed to block the rallies--adding to tensions in the growing political crisis over the method of choosing a successor to Chun, who is to step down in 1988.
