The World : Enrile Got U.S. Warning

President Reagan sent a former CIA official and a retired general to Manila last month to warn Philippine President Corazon Aquino’s defense minister against a coup attempt, U.S. News & World Report reported. The magazine said former CIA deputy director Ray S. Cline and retired Lt. Gen. Robert L. Schweitzer, a former member of the National Security Council staff, met with Juan Ponce Enrile to caution him against mounting a coup. Aquino dismissed Enrile last month after persistent rumors in Manila that he was planning to try to oust her.
