A juvenile court in Genoa, Italy, convicted Bassam Ashker, a Palestinian, in the hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruise liner and sentenced him to 16 years in prison. He was the fourth Palestinian convicted of charges in the hijacking, during which American passenger Leon Klinghoffer was killed. Ashker’s case was separated from the others because he was 17 when the ship was seized in October, 1985. Authorities initially thought Ashker was 19, and he was tried by a regular court, convicted of arms possession and sentenced to six years in prison. An appeals court voided the earlier conviction.
