A Lebanese cease-fire disintegrated less than 24 hours after going into effect when Shia Muslim militiamen battled anew with Palestinian guerrillas in Beirut and Sidon. Iranian mediators had brokered the truce, and they resumed urgent contacts with representatives of the warring factions to contain the flare-up. Police said two people were killed and 24 wounded in the latest fighting, raising the known toll to 427 killed and 918 wounded in 13 days of fighting.
