Moscow Orders Halt to Drilling After Protest
Soviet authorities have halted an offshore oil drilling project in the Baltic Sea after protests by leading intellectuals who said the plan posed a grave threat to the area’s ecology.
The official news agency Tass said Saturday that the government had ordered a halt to the construction of a drilling platform off Kurskaya Kosa, a thin finger of sandy beach off the Lithuanian coast.
The agency referred to an article published in the weekly Literary Gazette last month in which 18 intellectuals warned that oil spills could turn the region into a dead zone.
