Norway and France signed a cooperation pact.

The 10-year industrial and cultural cooperation accord was signed after France accepted its part of a $70-billion gas deal that will make Norway Western Europe’s largest single gas supplier. Norwegian Oil and Energy Minister Arne Oeien described the French decision to sign the deal, after several months of hesitation, as a victory for Norway’s refusal to grant Paris preferential economic status. The contract covers 27 years.
