Drug traffickers shot down a Bolivian air force helicopter on a cocaine raid, killing a police doctor and injuring at least four soldiers and policemen, authorities said. The attack occurred 205 miles southeast of La Paz in Chapare province, Bolivia’s principal coca-growing region, Information Minister Herman Antelo said. Drug traffickers fired at the French-made Lama helicopter as it looked for an airplane that intelligence sources said was to take off with a load of coca paste, Antelo said.
