Storm Lifts Voyager Past Guam

Voyager’s pilots, after darting around Pacific thunderheads and picking up typhoon tail winds, soared past Guam today with all systems A-OK on the third day of their attempt to circle the globe without refueling, spokesmen said.

Co-pilots Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager passed Guam at about 10 a.m. PST and headed toward the Malay Peninsula, said project spokeswoman Wanda Wolf. “Everything is going well,” she said. “Dick is doing most of the flying. They’re getting a real good boost from the typhoon tail winds. They’ve been able to maintain about 145 m.p.h.”
