Dana Point : Incorporation Push Slated for Weekend

Share

A residents’ group trying to turn this unincorporated community into a city will mount a final effort this weekend to collect the remaining 500 signatures it needs to apply for incorporation, according to Mike Eggers, co-chairman of the group.

The group, Dana Point Citizens for Incorporation, hopes to submit its application to the county Local Agency Formation Commission by Dec. 31. On Jan. 1, new state legislation takes effect that will make it more expensive for communities to incorporate.

The Board of Supervisors extended that deadline two months until March 1, but Eggers said the group would stick to its original timetable.

Neighboring Laguna Niguel also is pursuing incorporation and has included Dana Point in its tentative boundaries for a future city. By being one of the first communities to formally apply for incorporation, the Dana Point group hopes to persuade the LAFC that its residents want their own city and do not want to join Laguna Niguel, said Eggers, a longtime Dana Point resident who also is an aide to Rep. Ron Packard (R-Carlsbad).

The group has collected about 1,500 signatures so far on petitions that favor incorporation and request that the issue be placed on the ballot in November, 1987, Eggers said. About 60 people will be walking door to door soliciting signatures this weekend.
