USX Corp. and the United Steelworkers said in Pittsburgh they had agreed to seek the help of Sylvester Garrett, a veteran contract mediator, in settling their 140-day work stoppage, the longest in the history of the U.S. steel industry. The two sides tentatively scheduled a meeting with the mediator for today or Saturday, sources said. The meeting with Garrett would be the first since Nov. 21, when negotiators for 22,000 steel workers declared talks to be deadlocked over job security and wage-cut issues.
