The Vatican has turned thumbs down on another teaching text previously bearing a bishop’s OK.

At the Vatican’s behest, Rochester’s Bishop Matthew H. Clark has withdrawn his imprimatur, or church approval, from a sex education manual written by the Rev. Matthew A. Kawiak, a local priest, and Susan Sullivan, a Catholic high school science teacher, and published by Paulist Press.

The Vatican’s doctrinal congregation said the book has positive features but is “defective” about church teachings.

Previously, Paulist Press halted circulation of a widely used adult education text because of Vatican objections.
