Bombs exploded in three Northern Ireland hotels in County Tyrone, causing extensive damage but no casualties. The outlawed Irish Republican Army claimed responsibility for the attacks, and police said it could mark the beginning of a Christmas offensive by the guerrilla group, which is seeking to end British rule in Northern Ireland. The bombs exploded in Cookstown and Dungannon, near the border with the Irish Republic. In all cases, the guerrillas gave notice of the bombs, and the hotels were evacuated before the explosions.
