Voyager Expected to Land at Dawn as Tail Winds Help
Voyager flew into 15-knot head winds over the Pacific Ocean today as pilots Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, bruised and buffeted by turbulence, headed up the coast of Mexico toward early completion of their historic unrefueled global flight.
Voyager is expected to land about dawn Tuesday at Edwards Air Force Base. Voyager spokeswoman Joan Richey said at the project’s Mojave base that as of 7 a.m. today the aircraft had traveled 23,237 miles with 1,876 miles to go.
The landing initially had been expected Wednesday afternoon, but tail winds advanced the schedule as fears about excessive fuel consumption eased.
