Separatist tribal guerrillas attacked Bengali settlers in northeastern India, smashed down doors and killed 11 people and wounded three. Police in Agartala, capital of Tripura state, said the massacre occurred in the village of Malbassa, about 200 miles northeast of Calcutta. An Indian news agency quoted intelligence sources as saying the victims had refused to pay “taxes” to guerrillas fighting to drive out the Bengali-speaking Hindu settlers from Bangladesh. The influx of Bengalis has reduced the indigenous people to a minority in Tripura, which was an independent principality until 1949.
