The MX missile was declared operational as the first 10 went on full alert status beneath southwestern Wyoming. The MX, which the Reagan Administration calls Peacemaker, is now “in place, in the ground, ready to be called on should the President decide that it is needed in a national emergency,” Pentagon spokesman Robert Sims said. Each MX is equipped with 10 nuclear warheads and housed in strengthened Minuteman III silos. Congress has authorized deployment of 50 of the new weapons.
