Thirty-six Portuguese released by Mozambican rebels in a Christmas good-will gesture arrived in Lisbon, looking thin and tired after as long as 17 months of hunger and hardship. The group, including 17 children, was freed by Mozambican National Resistance rebels a week ago. The Portuguese told of being forced to endure long marches through the bush, poor food and physical hardships after being captured in rebel raids. During the ordeal, one captive died of malaria. Another gave birth the day before they were freed.
