JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — The pass rate in black South African school-leaving examinations rose slightly this year despite class boycotts, according to government statistics released Wednesday.
But only 39% of black candidates won their matriculation or high school graduation certificates, compared with a 90% success rate for white pupils. Last year’s rate for blacks was 37%.
The Department of Education and Training, which is responsible for black schooling, said: “Many candidates would have achieved better results were it not for disruptions and senseless stayaway actions.”
Black schooling has been seriously disrupted for nearly three years by political protest.
