Israel has assured Italian authorities that it did not infringe on that nation’s sovereignty when it brought Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu back from Europe to face trial for leaking alleged atomic secrets, Foreign Minister Shimon Peres said. Vanunu sneaked a message to reporters last Sunday saying he was abducted in Rome and spirited back to Israel after telling a British newspaper that Israel has produced nuclear warheads for two decades. Peres told armed forces radio that Israel sent clarifications requested by Italy on Vanunu’s allegation. Meanwhile, Vanunu’s attorney said that prison authorities have ordered all books withheld from his client for one month as punishment for telling reporters he was abducted.
