Salt Lake County Sheriff Pete Hayward said plea bargain negotiations have been under way for several months between prosecutors and attorneys for Mark Hofmann, accused of the booby-trap deaths of two people to cover up a fake Mormon documents scheme. Two Salt Lake City television stations reported an agreement was near. Hofmann, 32, is to go on trial March 2. Hofmann, a dealer in historical papers, allegedly planted the bombs Oct. 15, 1985, to cover up forgeries of Mormon documents. Hayward said he would oppose any agreement that allows Hofmann to plead guilty to any charge other than first-degree murder.
