Israel has reopened a controversial detention center in the occupied Gaza Strip after the arrest of dozens of suspected Palestinian guerrillas, security sources said Wednesday.

Last week’s arrests apparently were aimed at breaking a guerrilla ring in the Gaza area calling itself Islamic Jihad (Islamic Holy War).

The Israeli military says the Sunni Muslim group--which is not believed to have any connection to the Lebanese Shia movement of the same name--is responsible for stabbing to death two Israeli civilians in Gaza City in November.

The tented detention center on the city’s beach was reopened because Gaza Prison was overcrowded, the sources said.

It was closed only weeks ago amid Arab accusations, denied by Israel, that prisoners were beaten and humiliated by guards.
