World oil production shot up by nearly 6% in 1986 as OPEC waged its pricing war against outside producers for the largest annual increase in a decade, the Petroleum Economist magazine reported Friday.

Production climbed to 60 million barrels day in 1986 from 56.8 million barrels daily the year before, but remained well below the peak of 65.8 million barrels a day set in 1979, the magazine’s annual survey showed.
